In a show with so much poetic language around dreams and nature, and a connection to the Yoruba gods through the names of the characters, I was instantly drawn to the imagery of tree roots and the feeling of looking up from the depths of the ocean. Through research I learned that mangrove trees are native to Yorubaland, and thus found my inspiration. Additionally, I wished to connect this space to the real world. So when thinking of streets at night, imagined telephone pole wires and streetlamps intermingled with the weaving branches. Bioluminescence brightens the space when the ensemble chants as a chorus.
